West Point Woodcarvers Home of the Unnecessarily Sharp Carvers

This pair of carvings is from the Rocky Mountain Carver’s Roundup I attended in Midway, UT earlier this year (2023). I need to put the finishing touches on ‘Stumped’ and ‘Floppy’ to get them ready for the acrylic paint I’ll be laying down later. Roughouts are from CCA Member, Dale Green’s ‘Boomer’ and Dwayne Gosnell’s ‘Duke’. I learned a lot from carving alongside these Magnificent Legends, Dale and Dwayne!

Commissioned piece, Maple Eagle, Poplar Stick, Briwax-Mohawk Toner Finish, Brass Transition Ring, Doweled Connection.

They’re all lined up! These are the three Best of Division awards I’ve received while carving in Open Level (L – 2019 Moose; M – 2010 Lightning & Snake; R – 2008, Father Winter). Now it’s on to Expert Level Carving! I hope I’ve shown some improvement over that 11 year period of time.

Our Club President was asked to carve the Topping for the Groom’s Wedding Cake. What made it interesting is that the groom is his son and the bride his new daughter-in-law. He carved their two faces after much wrestling with a very sharp knife. Good job President!

The President has tried his hand at carving softballs. There is an article in the Fall 2011 issue of Woodcarvers Illustrated. Try it out but remember to keep your tools sharp! Look in my carving album for other pictures. Have a Happy Holiday everyone!!!
